VINAL
The name was brought into England during the wake of the Norman Invasion of 1066 and gave rise to the place Vine-Hall, an estate in the parish of Watlington, County Sussex, which was possessed by the family in the 14th century. The estate gave name to the Vynehalls, afterwards of Kingston, near Lewes, who, as Vinalls, in 1657, obtained a grant of arms (Sussex Arch. (Sussex Arch. Coll. ix. 75, and v. Lower's Patronymica Britannica). The variant Vinal has ramified strongly in the United States of America.
"A Coat of arms granted to John Vinall of Kingston- letters patent Nov.22, 1661; actual arms were granted 1657. A Heralds Visitation was carried out in 1662 to check pedigrees. This has the blazon of a black field, a gold chief charged with three black lions rampant. This Coat of Arms was granted during Oliver Cromwell's Protectorship 1649 - 1658, suggesting that the family were strong supporters of the Parliamentary cause. Verification of this can be obtained from College of Arms in London."

Georgeanna was the daughter of Captain John Anderson, born in Sweden about 1824. Immigrated in 1844 was of (maybe) Bridgeport, CT, and Searsport, ME, a sea captain who “was lost at sea with The Polyanthus” after September 4, 1951, when it left the Delaware Breakwater and disappeared, (Boston Shipping News report extrapolated from the Salem Register, November 15, 1851) and Emily Trundy (Anderson, Nickerson) daughter of George Trundy and Theodate Smith, daughter of Peter Smith and Hannah Sanborn. 1850 census shows John Anderson and Emily Trundy with daughter Julia E (or Emma J and Georgeanna.) Emma married John Stockman and resided in Boston when her mother Emily R. Trundy Anderson Nickerson died at her home. (She was widowed before 1880)
Georgeanna married first to Charles A. Hutchinson of New Hampshire, on May 30, 1868 in Biddeford, York, Maine. (He died on February 10, 1875.) They had a daughter, Gertrude Lena born in 1874, and probably a son, Frank, born in 1871. Charles owned land in Searsport which was left to Georgeanna.
MARION K VINAL was born May 10, 1879 aboard the steamship, “Katahdin” on its Boston to Bangor run, somewhere near White Head. They were headed to Searsport to see Georgianna’s mother, Ruth Vinal. Two newspapers gave the account.
The Lowell Census of 1880, taken June 4, shows the household of Arthur Vinal of Maine age 26 with Georgie Vinal age 27, at 24 Proud Street. Frank Vinal, age 9 (b. 1871) and Gertrude Vinal (who is Gertrude Lena Hutchinson), age 6 (b. 1874) are listed as son and daughter of Arthur, but are probably the children of Charles Hutchinson and Georgeanna). Georgeanna is listed as the wife of Arthur.
Emma J. Stockman, age 29, Georgeanna’s older sister is listed as a boarder in the household and working in a cotton mill. Her half brother William Nickerson, age 24 is also listed.
Katie is shown in the 1880 census, taken June 9, 1880 with widowed Ruth Vinal in Maine. It’s possible she went to Ruth in Maine when Georgeanna left or died between June 4 and June 9 of 1880.
Little Katie Vinal was living with Ruth Vinal when she was two years old in 1881.
There are conflicting records as to where Katie lived from the age of 2-5, but it was probably with Ruth Vinal.
At some point after that, She did go to Lowell to live with her father and his new wife, Fannie E. Dunham. I believe Katie lived with Ruth from age 1 to 5.
Arthur married Fannie E. Dunham, when Marion was five years old. Arthur and Fannie had a daughter, Hazel Leona Vinal on June 19, 1893, when Marion was 15.
Marion married Charles Benjamin Winters (see History of the Winters Family) on May 17, 1904, in Lowell, MA. She was a telephone operator and he was a clerk in the Mills. They had two sons, Paul Vinal Winters, born September 8, 1908, and Robert Lincoln Winters, born September 18, 1922. In 1932, Charles, Marion and Robert lived in New Rochelle, NY. (1930 census).

Arthur’s second wife was Fannie E. Dunham, daughter of Norman Dunham and Sarah Bickford of Troy, VT. She was born in Bakersfield or Troy, Vermont in 1860. (Tombstone), and was a domestic. She married Arthur Vinal on October 29, 1892 in Lowell, MA. They lived on Mount Pleasant St. in 1910. They had one daughter, Hazel Leona. She had a sister, Mrs. Leon E. Peabody of Rochester, NY. She was a member of First United Baptist Church of Lowell. She died in Gloucester, MA on January 17, 1942.
Hazel Leona Vinal was born on June 19, 1893. On September 17, 1913, Hazel married LeRoy E. Chudleigh, who was born about. 1890. They lived in Salem in 1932. They had two children, Vera L. Chudleigh, born about 1915 and Sarah L. Chudleigh who married a Mr. Weatherup, and lived in Mineola, Long Island, New York. In 1942 Hazel Chudleigh lived on Howard Avenue in Rockland. (Lowell Sun, January 19, 1942). A descendant of Hazel’s said she was an avid potter, making many beautiful pieces.
Arthur Vinal died on February 7, 1932 in Danvers State Hospital, Danvers, MA of arteriosclerosis and myocarditis, aged 77 years, 6 months and 24 days. Fannie died January 17, 1942 in Gloucester, MA at the age of 81. They are buried together in Edson Cemetery, Lowell, MA, near the Masons monument. The Lowell Sun, Feb. 8, 1932.
